Supporting our Community Since 2022
By Journos, For Journos
Keeping local reporting viable and essential in Ventura County.

Our Mission
The First Amendment Foundation of Ventura County is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded to promote journalism and freedom of speech in our county. We strive to empower journalists of all kinds—employed reporters, freelancers, stringers, and aspiring journalists—so that timely, verifiable, data-based news can continue to better the lives of people across our community.
Healthy communities need access to ethically produced local reporting
Our Vision
We envision a Ventura County where no resident or group is disenfranchised due to a lack of accurate, relevant local news, and where journalism is created with and for the community.
Our Focus
The First Amendment Foundation of Ventura County fosters a more informed public by supporting community-powered journalism and impactful storytelling by and for the people of our region.
Upcoming Programs

Journalist Support
We aim to provide grants, training, and advisory services to support newsroom professionals.
Offer networking events, mentorship, and financial support—particularly crucial for reporters covering community issues on their own.
Cultivating New Talent
We seek to partner with local schools, colleges, and community groups to share best practices, including eventually offering scholarships and apprenticeships for aspiring reporters.
Encourage and train residents who want to become neighborhood-level reporters, bridging news gaps and strengthening civic engagement.

Community-Powered Reporting
We will bring journalists and community members together in story circles, forums, and listening sessions to co-create articles and content that reflect local priorities.
Provide resources and guidance for digital tools that enable reporters to gather community input, share findings, and refine coverage based on audience feedback.
